India's first ever Legal Counsel Award takes place in Mumbai.
IDFC bags Team of the year award
Mumbai, January 19, 2012: The Ideas Exchange, in association with Lex Witness Magazine and National Bar Association of India as the Event Partner presented India’s first ever awards to recognize and honor the excellence amongst the corporate legal fraternity – the Legal Counsel India Awards today.
The 3rd edition of The Legal Counsel Congress, India’s premiere peer-to-peer- knowledge and networking exchange for the in-house legal community was organized on the 18th & 19th January 2012 at Taj Land’s End in Mumbai.
The first day kicked off with an opening debate on where next for the In-house counsel community. With the motion: “From lawsuits to lawyers - GC’s have finally arrived within corporate India” industry stalwarts Abhayan Jawaharlal - Head Group Legal Biocon Ltd, Vineet Vij - Head of Legal HCL Technologies Ltd., Tapan Pati – Legal Counsel Hilton Worldwide, and Y M Shivamurthy – Group President Legal & General Counsel GMR were arguing for and against the motion in a fierce debate.
The second day of the event witnessed India’s first ever Legal Counsel Awards for the community. Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson of the Jury MR Prasanna, a well-known Corporate Law Consultant said, “Despite the Indian legal universe being one of the highest in the world, the society didn’t have a dedicated platform to appreciate their contribution. I think it is great to finally have this kind award for the in-house legal community”.
The Best Employer for In-house lawyers went to GEOMETRIC , while the award for Best Use of Technology was given to GEOMETRIC.
Speaking on the occasion, Vikas Vij, Managing Director, The Ideas Exchange said, “The Ideas Exchange is committed to delivering knowledge based platforms for a discerning and informed industry to ideate and enable business exchanges in a creative, efficient and responsive manner. IDFC won the Team of the year category. Rajeev Uberoi of IDFC won the General Counsel of the Year award. Young In-House Lawyer of the Year award was given to K.P Madhan Kumar of GMR.
Speaking on the occasion, Shyam Grover, Group Editor & CEO, Lex Witness said, “Covering five categories, these cross sector awards set the benchmark for exemplary work being done by in-house teams of both domestic companies and global firms based out of India. These awards are the first step towards appreciating and celebrating the role of in-house counsel in driving business growth”.
A distinguished jury headed by Corporate Law Consultant – MR Prasanna, comprising eminent professionals, Anshuman Sharma – Country General Counsel Novartis, Vijaya Sampath Advisor to Group Chairman and CEO Bharti Airtel, Samuel Mani Kallupurakal – General Counsel Infosys Technologies, Girish Gokhale General Counsel JSW and Rajinder Sharma – President and Group General Counsel DuPont were present at the function and shared their thoughts in the course of the function.
The 4th edition of this exclusive community forum for in-house counsel will return next year in February 2013.
